1. ⇒ مدّ

مَدَّهُ, (Ṣ, L, Ḳ,) aor. ـُ {يَمْدُدُ}, (L,) inf. n. مَدٌّ; and مَدَّ بِهِ; andمدّدهُ↓; [or this has an intensive or a frequentative signification;] andتمدّدهُ↓; (L, Ḳ;) andمادّهُ↓, or ماددهُ, (as in different copies of the Ḳ, TA,) inf. n. مُمَادَّةٌ and مِدَادٌ; (Ḳ;) He drew it (namely a rope, &c., A); pulled it: strained it: extended it by drawing or pulling; stretched it. (L, Ḳ, El-Basáïr.) You say also مَدَّ القَوْسَ [He drew the bow]; (Ṣ, Mṣb, Ḳ, in art. نزع;) and مَدَّ مِنَ البِئْرِ [He drew water from the well]. (Ṣ, Ḳ, art. متح.) [Hence, app., مَدَّ بِأَرْفَادِى: see رِفْدٌ.]

قَائِلُ كَلِمَةِ الزُّورِ وَالَّذِى يَمُدُّ بِحَبْلِهَا فِى الإِثْمِ سَوَآءٌ [The utterer of falsehood and he who transmits it are in respect of the sin alike]: a trad. of ʼAlee; in which the utterer of the falsehood is likened to him who fills the bucket in the lower part of the well, and the relater thereof to him who draws the rope at the top. (L.)

مَدَّ صَوْتَهُHe prolonged, or strained, his voice [as the Arab does in chanting]: (L:) andتَمَدَّدَ↓ فِى الصَّوْتِ عِنْدَ الوَعِيدِ[He strained the voice in threatening]. (Ḳ, art. نمر.)

مَدَّ, inf. n. مَدٌّ, ‡ It (his sight) was, or became, stretched, and raised, إِلَى شَىْءٍ towards a thing. (Ḳ.)

مَدَّهُ, aor. ـُ {يَمْدُدُ}, (L,) inf. n. مَدٌّ; andامدّهُ↓, inf. n. إِمْدَادٌ; (L, Ḳ;) but the latter is little used; (L;)He made him to continue; to go on long; left him, or let him alone, long, or for a while; granted him a delay, or respite. (L, Ḳ.*) Ex. مَدَّهُ فِى غَيِّهِ, (Ṣ, L,) andامدّهُ↓, (L,)He made him to continue, &c., in his error. (Ṣ, L.) And in like manner, مَدَّ ٱللّٰهُ لَهُ فِى العَذَابِGod made him to continue, or go on long, in a state of punishment. (L.) See also 3.

مَدَّ, (Ṣ, L, Mṣb,) aor. ـُ {يَمْدُدُ}, [contr. to analogy,] (L,) inf. n. مَدٌّ; (Ṣ, L, Ḳ;) It (water, L, and a river, Ṣ, L, and a sea, or great river, L) flowed: (Ṣ, L, Ḳ:) it (water, L, and a sea, or great river, L, Mṣb) increased; as alsoامدّ↓; both of which verbs are also used transitively: (Mṣb:) or became much in quantity, copious, or abundant, in the days of the torrents; as alsoامتدّ↓: (L:) contr. of جَزَرَ [it ebbed]. (Lth, Ṣ, M, Ḳ in art. جزر.)

مَدَّهُ, (Lḥ, Ṣ, L, Mṣb,) aor. ـُ {يَمْدُدُ}, (Lḥ, L,) inf. n. مَدٌّ; (Lḥ, L, Mṣb;) andامدّهُ↓; (L, Mṣb;) It (a thing) entered into it, (i. e., a like thing,) and increased it, or made it copious or abundant: (Lḥ, L:) it (a river, Ṣ, L, or sea, or great river, L, Mṣb) flowed into it, (i. e., another river, or sea, or great river,) and increased it, replenished it, or made it copious or abundant: (Ṣ,* L, Mṣb:*) it (a well) fed it, i. e., another well: (L:) [see an ex. in a verse cited in art. غرو, conj. 3]: both these verbs are also used intransitively. (Mṣb.)

مَدَّ القَوْمَ, [aor. ـُ {يَمْدُدُ}, inf. n. مَدٌّ,] He became an auxiliary to the people: (Ḳ:) and مَدَدْنَاهُمْ We became auxiliaries to them: somewhat differing fromأَمَدْنَاهُمْ↓, which signifies We aided them, or succoured them, by others than ourselves: (AZ, Ṣ, L, Ḳ:) you say,أَمْدَدْتُهُ↓ بِمَدَدٍ I aided him, and strengthened him, [or increased his numbers and strength,] with an army: (Ṣ,* Mṣb:) andأَمَدَّ↓ الأَمِيرُ جُنْدَهُ بِالخَيْلِ وَالرِّجَالِ The commander aided, or succoured, his army with cavalry and infantry, or with horses and men: andامدّهُمْ↓ بِمَالٍ كَثِيرٍ He aided them with, or, as some say, gave them, much wealth: (L:) and [it is said in the Ḳur, lii. 22,] وَأَمْدَدْنَاهُمْ بِفَاكِهَةٍ (Ṣ, L) And We will increase their provision time after time with fruit: (Beyd, Jel:) or with relation to evil, you say مَدَدْتُهُ; and with relation to good,أَمْدَدْتُهُ↓: (Ḳ:) so says Yoo: (L:) this is generally the case; and the following are examples: أَمْدَدْنَاهُمْ بِفَاكِهَةٍ [explained above]: and نَمُدُّهُمْ مِنَ العَذَابِ (El-Basáïr) [Ḳur, xix. 82,] We will prolong and increase to them punishment: (Beyd;:) but Z relates, that Akh said the reverse, like وَعَدَ and أَوْعَدَ: the usage of the Arabs, however, does not accord with either of these assertions. مَدَّ الأَرْضَ, (aor. ـُ {يَمْدُدُ} A, inf. n. مَدٌّ, L,) He manured the land with dung: (A, Ḳ:) or he added to the land manure composed of dung and ashes, or of earth or dust and dung, or of strong earth; or simply earth; or sand; to render it more productive. (L.)

مَدَّ الإِبِلَ, (AZ, Ṣ, A, L, Ḳ.) aor. ـُ {يَمْدُدُ}, inf. n. مَدٌّ; (AZ, L;) andامدّها↓; (Ṣ, A, L;) He gave مَدِيد (or water upon which had been sprinkled, or with which had been mixed, some flour, or the like, &c.) to the camels to drink: (AZ, Ṣ, A, L, Ḳ:) or he put some barley coarsely ground, and then moistened, into the camel's mouths: (AZ, L:) or مَدَّهُ بِمَدِيدٍ, aor. ـُ {يَمْدُدُ}, inf. n. مَدٌّ, signifies, as some say, he fed him with fodder. مَادَدْتُهُ, inf. n. مُمَادَّةٌ and مِدَادٌ, I pulled him, he pulling me: (Lḥ, L:) I contended with him in drawing or pulling, in straining, or in stretching; syn. جَاذَبْتُهُ. (L.)

تمدّد He (a man) stretched himself: he walked with an elegant, and a proud, and self-conceited, gait, with an affected inclining of his body from side to side, and stretching out his arms: syn. تَمَطَّى. 8. ⇒ امتدّ

امتدّ, (Ṣ, L, Ḳ,) andتمدّد↓, [or this has an intensive or frequentative signification,] (L, Ḳ.) It (a rope, &c., A) because drawn, or pulled: it became strained: it became extended by drawing or pulling; it extended itself; it stretched. (L, Ḳ, El-Basáïr.) See also 5.

استمدّ مِنَ الدَّوَاةِ; (A, L, Mṣb, Ḳ:) andمَدَّ مِنْهَا↓, inf. n. مَدٌّ; (L, Mṣb, Ḳ;) He took ink from the receptacle thereof with the reed-pen, for writing: (Mṣb:) or he took a dip from the receptacle of ink with the reed-pen. (L.) See also 1.

مدٌّ

مدٌّ inf. n. of 1, q. v.

Root: مد - Entry: مدٌّ Signification: A2

[As a subst.] قَدْرُ مَدِّ البَصَرِ ‡ A piece of land (Ṣ, L) [occupying] the space of the extent of vision; i. q. مَدَاهُ. (Ṣ, L, Ḳ.) It is said in the Ḳ, art. مدى, that one should not say مدّ البصر, but only مَدَاهُ; this was originally said by El-Ḥareeree: but some urge against it the expression in a trad., مَدُّ صَوْتِ المُؤَذِّنِ: (MF:) the trad. is, إِنَّ المُؤَذِّنَ يُغْفَرُ لَهُ مَدَّ صَوْتِهِ, or, according to another reading, مَدَى صوته; i. e., ‡ Verily the muëdhdhin shall be forgiven to the extent of the prolonging of his voice; meaning, largely. سُبْحَانَ ٱللّٰهِ مِدَادَ↓ كَلِمَاتِهِ, (A, L, Ḳ,) andمَدَدَهَا↓, (L,) and مِدَادَ السَّمَوَاتِ, (L, Ḳ,) and مَدَدَهَا, (L,)I extol, or celebrate, or declare, the absolute purity, or perfection, or glory, of God, much as his words are numerous, (L,) and, as the heavens are many, or large: (L, Ḳ:*) مداد↓ andمدد↓ are here inf. ns. of مَدَّهُ, q. v.: (L:) or the first of these phrases is from مداد the pl. of مُدٌّ, a certain measure. (Ḳ.)

مُدٌّ

مُدٌّ A certain measure with which corn is measured; equal to a pint (رِطْل) and one third, (Ṣ, L, Mṣb, Ḳ,) of the standard of Baghdád, (Mṣb,) with the people of El-Ḥijáz, (Ṣ, L, Mṣb,) and accord. to Esh-Sháfiʼee; (L;) i. e., the quarter of a صَاع; the صاع being five pints and one third: (Mṣb:) such was the مدّ of the Prophet; (L, TA;) and the صاع above defined was that of the Prophet: (Mṣb, art. صوع:) or two pints, (Ṣ, L, Mṣb, Ḳ,) with the people of El-'Irák, (Ṣ, L, Mṣb,) and accord. to Aboo-Ḥaneefeh, (L,) who held the صاع to be eight pints: (Mṣb, art. صوع:) or the quantity (of corn, L) that fills the two hands of a man (of moderate size, Ḳ) when he extends his arms and hands; (L, Ḳ;) and therefore called مُدّ: (Ḳ:) pl. [of pauc.] أَمْدَادٌ and [of mult.] مِدَادٌ (L, Mṣb, Ḳ) and مِدَدَةٌ (L. Ḳ) and مِدَدٌ. (L.)

مَدَدٌ

مَدَدٌ (Ṣ, Ḳ, &c.)

أَمْرُهُمْ مَدَدٌ Their affair, or case, is conformable to the just mean; like أَمَدٌ and زَمَمٌ. (TA in art. زم).

Aid, or succour, given to one's people in war, &c., such as an auxiliary force, and corn; (T, L;) an accession to an army, &c.; (Mgh;) a military force forming an accession to warriors in the cause of God: (L:) pl. أَمْدَادٌ only: (Sb, L:) in like manner, مَادَّةٌ↓ signifies anything wherewith one aids a people in war, &c. (L.)

مُدَّةٌ

مُدَّةٌ ‡ The utmost, or extreme, extent, term, limit, reach, or point, of time, and of place. (L, Ḳ.) Ex. لِهٰذِهِ الأُمَّةِ مُدَّةٌTo this nation, or people, is [appointed] an extreme term of endurance, or continuance. (L.)

مُدَّةٌ ‡ A long space of time; or any space of time; syn. بُرْهَةٌ: (Ṣ, L, Ḳ:) a portion of time, whether little or much: (IAth, Mṣb:) pl. مِدَادٌ. (A.)

مُدَّةٌ A dip of ink; the quantity of ink that is taken upon the reed-pen. (Ṣ, A,* Ḳ.) The vulgar say مَدَّةٌ↓ and مِدَّةٌ. (TA.)


مِدَّةٌ

مِدَّةٌ Thick purulent matter, (A, Mṣb,) i. q. قَيْحٌ, (Ṣ, L, Mṣb, Ḳ,) that collects in a wound: (Ṣ, L:) the thin is called صَدِيدٌ. (A, Mṣb.)

مَدَدِىٌّ An auxiliary soldier. (L.)


مِدَادٌ

مِدَادٌ Anything that is added in a thing, because of its utility: this is the original signification accord. to old lexicologists. (MF.)
