1. ⇒ زبّ

زَبَّ, (Ḳ,) aor. يَزِبُّ accord. to the Ḳ, but correctly يَزَبُّ, the verb being like فَرِحَ, [so that the sec. pers. is زَبِبْتَ,] and the inf. n. being زَبَبٌ, (MF, TA,) [He, or it, was, or became, downy: and he (a man) had abundant and long hair; was hairy: or had abundance of hair in the ears and eyebrows: or had abundance of hair on the fore arms and the eyebrows and eyes: and he (a camel) had abundance of hair on the face and under the lower jaw: or in the ears and on the eyes:] the verb of زَبَبٌ expl. below. (Ḳ, TA.)

Hence, (TA,) زَبَّتِ الشَّمْسُ, (Ḳ,) inf. n. زَبٌّ [perhaps a mistranscription for زَبَبٌ], (TA,)The sun was near to setting; (Ḳ, TA;) because it becomes concealed as the colour of a limb does by the hair upon it; (TA;) as alsoازبّت↓, (Ṣ, Ḳ,) andزبّبت↓. (Ḳ.)

زَبَّ, aor. يَزُبُّ, (Ḳ,) inf. n. زَبٌّ, (TA,) He filled a water-skin (Ḳ, TA) to its head. (TA.)

زبّب, (Ṣ, Mgh, Mṣb, Ḳ,) inf. n. تَزْبِيبٌ, (Ṣ,) He converted grapes into زَبِيب [or raisins]; (Ṣ, Mgh, Mṣb;) he dried grapes, (Ḳ,) and likewise figs; (AḤn, Ḳ;) as alsoازبّ↓. (Ḳ.)

Also, (Ḳ,) and زبّب شِدْقَاهُ, (Ṣ, Ḳ,) Spittle collected in the two sides of his mouth: (Ḳ:) or froth, or foam, came forth upon the two sides of his mouth: (Ṣ:) and زبّب فَمُهُ (Ḳ, TA) [signifies the same; or] dry spittle appeared at the angles of his lips, next the tongue: (TA:) andتزبّب↓ (Ḳ) andتزبّب↓ شِدْقَاهُ (TA) froth, or foam, appeared in the two sides of his mouth. (Ḳ.) You say, تَكَلَّمَ فُلَانٌ حَتَّى زبّب شِدْقَاهُ Such a one spoke, or talked, until froth, or foam, came forth upon the two sides of his mouth. (Ṣ.) [And in like manner you say, زَبَّدَ شِدْقُهُ and تَزَبَّدَ شِدْقُهُ: and تَزَبَّدَ alone.]

زُبٌّ

زُبٌّ The penis; the male organ of generation; (Ṣ, A, Mṣb, Ḳ;) in the dial. of El-Yemen: i. e. absolutely: (TA:) or peculiarly of a human being: (IDrd, A, Ḳ:) or of a boy, in the dial. of El-Yemen: (T, TA:) or of a gazelle, or an antelope: (Eth-Tha'álibee, TA:) said by IDrd to be a genuine Arabic word: (TA:) dim. زُبَيْبٌ↓; and sometimes زُبَيْبَةٌ↓, with the fem. ة, as being a piece (قِطْعَةٌ) of the body: (Mṣb:) pl. [of pauc.] أَزْبَابٌ (Mṣb, Ḳ) and أَزُبٌّ and [of mult.] زَبَبَةٌ, (Ḳ,) the last extr. [with respect to rule]. (TA.)

زَبَبٌ

زَبَبٌ Down; syn. زَغَبٌ: (A, Ḳ:) and, in a man, (Ḳ, A,*) abundance of hair, (Ṣ, A, Ḳ,) and length thereof: (Ṣ:) or, in a man, abundance of hair in the ears and eyebrows: and abundance of hair on the fore arms and the eyebrows and eyes: (TA:) and in a camel, abundance of hair on the face and under the lower jaw: (Ḳ:) or in the ears and on the eyes. (TA.)


زَبَابٌ

زَبَابٌ A species of rat which is large and deaf: or which has red hair: (Ḳ:) or which has red and beautiful hair: (TA:) or which is without hair: (Ḳ:) or a species of field-rat, of large size: one thereof is called زَبَابَةٌ: (TA:) or this signifies a deaf rat: (Ṣ:) or a deaf rat of the desert: (A:) and its pl. is زَبَابٌ, [or rather this is a coll. gen. n. of which it is the n. un.,] (Ṣ, TA,) and [its pl. is] زَبَابَاتٌ. (TA.) The Arabs make it the subject of a prov.: (Ṣ:) they say, أَسْرَقُ مِنْ زَبابَةِ [More thievish than a zebábeh]. (Ṣ, A, TA. [Another reading is mentioned in the TA in art. زنب; namely, رَنَابَة; which is there said, on the authority of Ibn-ʼAbd-Rabbih in the عِقْد, to signify a rat, or mouse.]) And they also liken to it an ignorant person. (Ṣ, TA.) It is said in a trad. of ʼAlee, أَنَا وَٱللّٰهِ إِذًا مِثْلُ الَّتِى أُحِيطَ بِهَا فَقِيلَ زَباَبْ زَبَابْ حَتَّى دَخَلَتْ جُحْرَهَا ثُمَّ ٱحْتُفِرَ عَنْهَا فَٱجْتُرَّ بِرِجْلِهَا فَذُبِحَتْ, i. e. [I, by Allah, in that case, were] like that animal, namely, the she-hyena, which has been surrounded, and to which it has been said Zebáb! Zebáb! [until it has entered its hole, and then the earth has been dug away from it, and it has been dragged by its hind leg, and slaughtered:] meaning, I will not be like the she-hyena that is decoyed to its death: for that animal probably eats the زباب, as it does the field-rat. زَبِيبٌ / زَبِيبَةٌ

زَبِيبٌ Dried grapes; or raisins: and also dried figs: (Ḳ:) said by AḤn to have been used in this latter sense by an Arab of the desert: (TA:) a coll. gen. n.; masc. and fem.: (Mṣb:) n. un. with ة {زَبِيبَةٌ}. (Ṣ, Mṣb.)

Also The froth, or foam, of water: (Ḳ, TA:) and of a camel's mouth: (L in art. لقح:) and the poison in the mouth of a serpent. (Ḳ.) زَبِيبَةٌ [is the n. un., and] signifies ‡ A collection of froth, or foam, in the mouth of a person speaking, or talking, much: (A,* Ḳ:) [or the dual] زَبِيبَتَانِ signifies two collections of froth, or foam, (Ṣ,) or of spittle, (Ḳ,) or of dry spittle, (TA,) in the sides of the mouth, (Ṣ, Ḳ,) where the lips meet, next the tongue. (TA.) You say, غَضِبَ فَثَارَ لَهُ زَبِيبَتَانِHe was angry, and there appeared two collections of froth, or foam, in the two sides of his mouth. (A, TA.) زَبِيبَتَانِ, in a serpent, signifies † Two black small spots above the eyes: (Ṣ, Ḳ, and Mgh in art. شجع:) or two small spots next the mouth thereof: (TA:) or two collections of froth, or foam, in the two sides of the mouth thereof (TA, and Mgh ubi suprà) when it is angry. (Mgh.) And in a dog, Two black small spots above the eyes: (Ḳ:) or two things above the eyes, resembling the زَنَمَتَانِ [see رَنَمَةٌ] of a camel: or two pieces of flesh in the head, resembling two horns: or two fangs projecting from the mouth: and other explanations are given by the interpreters of strange words [occurring in the traditions]. (TA.)


زُبَيْبٌ

زُبَيْبٌ a dim. of زُبٌّ, q. v. (Mṣb.)

زَبِيبَةٌ

زَبِيبَةٌ n. un. of زَبِيبٌ. (Ṣ, Mṣb) [See the latter throughout.]

Also ‡ A small purulent swelling or pustule, that comes forth upon the hand, (Ṣ, A, Ḳ, TA,) like what is termed عَرْفَةٌ. (TA.)

زَبِيبِىٌّ

زَبِيبِىٌّ [now vulgarly called زَبِيب] A beverage made from زَبِيب [or raisins] (Mgh, Ḳ) by steeping them in water. (Ḳ.)

زَبْزَبٌ

زَبْزَبٌ A sort of ship or boat: (Ṣ, Ḳ:) a small ship or boat: pl. زَبَازِبُ. (Mṣb.)

Also A certain beast, resembling the cat: (Ḳ:) it is an animal black and white, short in the fore and hind legs. (Dmr, TA.)


أَزَبُّ

أَزَبُّ Downy: (Ḳ:) and, applied to a man, having much hair: (A, Ḳ:) or having much and long hair: (Ṣ, TA: [but accord. to the former, it seems to be applied in this sense to a camel:]) or, applied to a man, having much hair in the ears and eyebrows: and having much hair on the fore arms and the eyebrows and eyes: (TA:) or, thus applied, having much hair on the chest: (Mṣb:) and, applied to a camel, having much fur: or having much fur on the face: (A:) or having much hair on the face and under the lower jaw: (Ḳ:) or, in the ears and on the eyes: (TA:) or having much hair on the face and body: andزُبَيْبٌ↓ is a shortened dim. thereof: (Ḥam p. 140:) fem. زَبَّآءُ, applied to a woman as meaning having much hair in the eyebrows and on the fore arms and the hands: (A:) and to an ear as meaning having much hair: (TA:) pl. زُبٌّ. (A.) It is said in a prov., كُلُّ أَزَبَّ نَفُورٌ [Every one, of camels, that has much hair on the face, &c. is wont to take fright, and run away at random]: for the camel thinks what he sees upon his eyes to be a person seeking him, and consequently takes fright, and runs away at random: (A:) the camel to which this epithet applies is seldom, or never, other than نفور; because there grow upon his eyebrow small hairs, and when the wind strikes them he takes fright, and runs away at random. (Ṣ, TA.)

الأَزَبُّ is a name of One of the devils: (Ḳ, TA:) mention is made in a trad. of a certain devil named أَزَبُّ العَقَبَةِ: (Ḳ, TA:) but in the L, and in the Seeret El-Halabee, it is written إِزْبُ العَقَبَةِ: and it is said to be a serpent. (TA in art. ازب.)

الزَّبَّآءُ The اِسْت [i. e. podex, or anus], (Ḳ, TA,) with its hair. (TA.)

And دَاهِيَةٌ زَبَّآءُA calamity, or misfortune, hard to be borne, severe, (A, Ḳ, TA,) and abominable; like شَعْرَآءُ (TA) and وَبْرَآءُ. (Ṣ and A and TA in art. شعر.) Hence the prov., جَآءَبِالشَّعْرَآءِ الزَّبَّآءِ [He brought to pass that which was a calamity hard to be borne,, &c.] (TA.)
