قُنْفُذٌ / قُنْفُذَةٌ / قُنْفَذٌ

قُنْفُذٌ and قُنْفَذٌ [The male hedge-hog;] (Ṣ, L, Mṣb, Ḳ;) i. q. شَيْهَمٌ: (M, L, Ḳ:) or the male and female: (Mṣb:) or the fem. is with ة {قُنْفُذَةٌ}, (Ṣ, L, Mṣb, Ḳ,) sometimes; and the male is called شَيْهَمٌ and دُلْدُلٌ: (Mṣb:) pl. قَنَافِذُ. (Ṣ.) Some hold that the ن is an augmentative letter: others, that it is a radical. (TA.)

مَا أَبْيَضُ شَطْرًا أَسْوَدُ ظَهْرًا يَمْشِى قِمْطَرًا وَيَبُولُ قَطْرًا What is white in one half, black in the back, that walks contractedly, and makes water in drops? An enigma: to which the answer is, The قُنْفُذ [q. v.]. (L.)

قُنْفُذُ لَيْلٍ One who sleeps not [during the night]; because the قنفذ sleeps not: (L:) and a calumniator; a slanderer; (L, Ḳ;) as also أَنْقَدُ لَيْلٍ. (L.)

قُنْفُذٌA place that produces tangled herbage: (Ṣ, L, Ḳ:) an elevated place abounding with trees: AḤn says, that what is thus termed is in hard ground, between what is termed قُفّ and sand. (L.)
